The Blade For PFN – II Nail is an alternative or supplementary proximal fixation element for the Proximal Femoral Interlocking Nail (PFN – II) system. Unlike the standard lag screw, the blade has a wide, flat profile that compacts the bone in the femoral neck, providing excellent rotational stability and high pull-out resistance, which is advantageous for unstable proximal femur fractures. The blade is inserted through the PFN-II nail and is typically secured via a separate locking mechanism in the nail head.
Key features include:
-
System Specificity: Used exclusively with the PFN – II Intramedullary Nailing System.
-
Rotational Stability: Wide blade profile offers superior anti-rotational control compared to screws.
-
Primary Use: Proximal fixation and stabilization of the femoral neck and head in unstable fractures.
-
Length Range: Extensive lengths from 60mm to 120mm (with 5mm variation).
-
Material Options: Available in both Stainless Steel and Titanium.
